Receptors Systems
In biochemistry and pharmacology, receptors are chemical structures, composed of protein, that receive and transduce signals that may be integrated into biological systems.
Self-regulating systems:
- Up-regulation = increase in the number of neuronal receptors in response to low levels of NT
- Down-regulation = decrease in the number of receptors in response to high levels of NT
Allosteric Modulation:
- Indirect actions of multiple NT on receptors
Major NT Systems
- Acetylcholine
- Monoamines
- Catecholamines
- Dopamine
- Norepinephrine
- Epinephrine
- Indoleamines
- Serotonin
- Melatonin
- Catecholamines
- Amino Acids
- GABA
- Glutamate
