Thalamus

The thalamus is also part of the limbic system in the diencephalon (forebrain). 

Details:

  • Large mass of gray matter situated in forebrain
  • Sensory and relay center
  • Axons from every sensory system synapse here

Function:

  • Processes information
  • Wakefulness, sleep and pain perception
Damage Effect:
  • Over-flooding of information (or
  • Apathy, drowsiness and disturbed  perception
Psychopathology:
  • Negative symptoms of schizophrenia
