Hypothalamus

The hypothalamus regulates:

  • Sex hormones
  • Blood Pressure
  • Body temp
  • Sleep
  • Appetite

Functions:

  • Autonomic control
  • Temperature regulation
  • Thirst and appetite
  • Endocrine control
  • Emotional reactions
  • Sleep and wakefulness
  • Stress response
  • Hormones synthesized & released
  • Talks to pituitary

Function:

  • Bridges internal homeostasis and outside environment
  • Assoc w/ raw emotions of pleasure, reward, aversion and rage
  • Involved in hunger, thirst, water balance, regulation of temp, circadian rhythms and stress response
Damage Effect:
  • Eating, emotional instability, rage
  • Changes in temp, sleep and sex func
  • Uncontrolled laughter and crying
Psychopathology:
