Regulation of Hormone Release
Hormone release occurs either in response to an alteration in the cellular environment or in the process of maintaining a regulated level of certain hormones or certain substances. Hormone release is regulated by one or more of the following mechanisms:
- (a) chemical factors (that is, blood glucose or calcium levels);
- (b) endocrine factors (a hormone from one endocrine gland controlling another endocrine gland);
- and (c) neural control.
Feedback systems provide precise monitoring and control of the cellular environment. Both negative and positive feedback systems are important for maintaining hormone levels within physiologic ranges.
