Etiology

  • Physiologic: Results from changes in the ovary, with gradual atresia of ovarian follicles leading to a decrease in ovarian production of Estrogen & Progesterone. Fewer available follicles to produce Estradiol –most potent E2
  • Estrone becomes the primary E2 which is derived from conversion of androstenedisone to estrone in extraglandular sites
