Course Description

This course focuses on expanding the development of students' counseling skills (as begun in CNS 737), with a particular emphasis on the knowledge, skills, and awareness needed to work effectively with clients who may be in crisis. The advanced component of this class is understanding when and why to use a particular skill. To better assist students' clients in the future, this course will also place a high priority on each student’s ability to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and introspection. Students will also learn how to help a client identify goals and understand the five stages of changes. A central element of counseling, and specifically crisis intervention, is sitting with, holding, and tolerating intense emotional experiences, this course will enhance students' ability to experience, and assist others in experiencing, a full range of human emotions.


Course Objectives

This course has two primary objectives:

  1. Further develop their overall existing counseling skills and advanced Counseling Skills:
    1. Students will develop an awareness of the implications of counselor and client characteristics and their effect on the helping process (i.e., age, gender, culture, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, ethical and legal issues, capabilities, developmental level, etc.). (CACREP 3.E.7, 3.E.8)
    2. Students will deepen their awareness of themselves and the influence of their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors on the counseling process and relationship. (CACREP 3.E.8)
    3. Students will learn the conditions under which particular theoretical models and techniques can be utilized most effectively. (CACREP 3.E.1, 3.E.3, 3.E.13, 3.E.15)
    4. Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct an effective counseling interview. (CACREP 3.E.9)
  2. Provide students with specific training in managing crisis situations within a counseling setting:
    1. Students will develop awareness of crisis intervention, trauma-informed, and community based strategies, such as psychological first aid. (CACREP 3.E.19, 3.E.20)
    2. Students will conduct appropriate assessments in crisis situations, demonstrate knowledge of the effects of crisis on persons of all ages/developmental levels. (CACREP 3.E.19, 3.E.10, 3.G.13, 3.G.14, 3.G.15)
    3. Students will demonstrate effective intervention skills, and will learn strategies for assessing the effectiveness of their interventions. (CACREP 3.E.15)
    4. Students will demonstrate effectiveness in conducting suicide risk assessments, developing specific interventions related to suicide, and consider procedures for assessing risk of aggression or danger to others and self-inflicted harm. (CACREP 3.E.19, 3.G.13)

Live Sessions

Students will find the day and time in the course:

Attendance at one live session is mandatory by the end of Week 5. Students are required to attend the office hour of either their Lead Faculty or PI to engage in live skills practice. In order to receive credit, students should have their camera on and participate actively.


Methods of Instruction

Instructional methods in this course include lectures, discussions, case studies, experiential activities related to course content, and other interactive activities.


Instructor Interactions

Apart from clinical courses, WFU online courses are primarily asynchronous in nature, meaning students and instructors can engage with the learning materials at different times. There are a few notable exceptions, however, such as live sessions, office hours, and triad work (skills courses). For the asynchronous portions of our courses, students interact with instructors through virtual discussion boards, weekly video and/or written announcements, email communications, and formative and summative feedback on assignments. For the synchronous portions of our courses, students interact with lead instructors in weekly, recorded live sessions, and with practitioner instructors in office hours. Regarding live sessions, lead instructors meet virtually with students one hour per week in which they present on a topic related to the learning material for the week, as well as answer questions that students have about the course material or assignments. In office hours, practitioner instructors answer students’ questions about course content and assignments. They also, at times, present on topics related to that week’s lessons.

In clinical courses, university supervisors interact with students primarily through individual/triadic and group supervision sessions. University supervisors also monitor students’ time logs, review required practicum and internship documents, evaluate their counseling session recordings and writeups, and submit midterm and final evaluations related to students’ counseling skills development, as well as their professional dispositions and behaviors development.

Discussions

Discussions serve as the main vehicle for communication between students in the class. Using the forums, information will be shared, concepts will be discussed, and opinions expressed. Students are expected to respond to their peers in a professional and engaging manner that neither attacks nor demeans their peers' perspectives.

Discussion 1.1: Non-judgmental Listening Skills Evaluation

Description: Students will reflect on their strongest and weakest counseling skills, outline realistic strategies for improvement, and discuss the importance of being a client-centered therapist as they prepare for practicum and internship.

Discussion 1.2: Motivational Interviewing Video Response

Description: Students will analyze a segment of a Motivational Interviewing session to evaluate the counselor''s use of nonjudgmental listening and discrepancy skills, reflect on their effectiveness using rating scales, and support their insights with scholarly references.

Discussion 2.1: Goal Setting

Description: Students will view two counseling videos to evaluate goal-setting techniques and the use of OARS skills, then respond to guided questions and engage in peer discussion to deepen understanding of effective counseling strategies.

Discussion 5.1: Tightropes & Safety Nets: Counseling Suicidal Clients

Description: Students will analyze one of three suicide assessment case vignettes to evaluate counseling and safety planning skills, assess client risk, and propose appropriate interventions, while engaging in peer discussion to deepen understanding.

Discussion 6.1: Crisis Resources Presentation

Description: Students will create a 7–10 minute video presentation identifying crisis types within a chosen client population, describing one local and one national resource for support, and reflecting on how these insights will inform their practicum and future counseling practice.

Discussion 7.1: Domestic Violence

Description: Students will develop supportive and nonjudgmental responses to a client experiencing domestic violence, reflect on the challenges of counseling in such situations, and engage in peer dialogue to explore diverse approaches to client safety and empowerment.

Discussion 7.2: Burnout Prevention

Description: Students will reflect on signs of burnout and compassion fatigue, identify personal self-care strategies to prevent burnout, and engage in peer discussion supported by scholarly references.

Student Learning Outcomes / Key Performance Indicators

There are four signature assignments for this course, the two video recordings and their corresponding self-assessment papers, that are to be submitted in Anthology Portfolio, an e-Portfolio, data storage, and data management program. The signature assignments will be used for course grade calculations (using the grading rubric), program evaluation reporting, and student learning outcomes (SLO) / key performance indicator (KPI) monitoring. For program evaluation reporting and SLO/KPI monitoring, we use a CACREP rubric that measures student learning on a scale from 1 (harmful) to 5 (exceeds expectations). The student learning outcome on which you will be evaluated for the video recording assignments is V.a.: Students demonstrate their use of evidence-based counseling strategies and techniques to develop and sustain therapeutic relationships. The student learning outcome on which you will be evaluated for the self-assessment assignments is I.b: Students possess awareness of themselves and an ability to self-evaluate.

Based on the 2024 CACREP standards (2.E.1.a., 2.C.1.a.), our counseling program is required to report aggregated SLO/KPI ratings, as well as monitor individual student SLO/KPI progress. The expectation is that students, on average and individually, will receive average CACREP rubric ratings of 4 (meets expectations) on each SLO/KPI measure. Student ratings on SLO/KPI measures that fall below a 3 (near expectations) may result in remediation.


Late Work

Students are encouraged to make the same effort to submit all assignments on time that they would make in the workplace. It is, however, understood that sometimes circumstances arise that are beyond one's control. To request an extension, students should contact their Lead Faculty as soon as a problem is identified to provide details and determine a realistic deadline. Assignments submitted late without prior approval will not be eligible for full credit.

Unless arrangements have been made and extension approved by the Lead Faculty, students who submit late assignments will receive a 10% grade deduction for each day beyond the due date.

It is very important that students actively engage in class discussions, and that students communicate in a timely manner with their instructors if unforeseen circumstances negatively affect their academic engagement.
