Finding Peer-Reviewed Articles

In this video, we are going to discuss finding scholarly peer-reviewed articles for your project. Scholar OneSearch is one resource you can use for article searching. We looked at it earlier when we were books searching in the library catalog, but it will also look for articles in a number of libraries.

To find specialized search engines, I would suggest going to “Research Subject Guides” on the library homepage. Here you will find guides and most of the disciplines taught at the University. Since you are in a business management class, I wanted to show you the business guide, which is very comparable to other guides on this site. On each guide you will find out the library and responsible for this subject area. There is a link to the librarian’s appointment calendar. You can book a time to get help with research. If the times don’t meet your needs, just click the “email” button and contact the library directly. On the guide, we’ll list the most important resources we offer you in the subject area.

Now in the field of environmental and sustainability, you are going to find that there is a lot of business slant to those topics because often times when people are talking about sustainability they are also looking. For that reason, “Business Source Complete” is the resource you might consider searching.

I’m going to transfer back to the main list of subject guides and go down to the “Environmental Research across the Disciplines.” This guide is a little bit different because it is maintained by a couple of different people, so you don’t see the appointment schedule. We can, however, connect you with the appropriate librarians.

Notice there is a tab called “Journal Articles.” This is where you are going to find search tools that will help you get the kinds of materials you need. We particularly recommend GreenFILE. We’re going to click to open GreenFILE, if you are at home it would be asked to look at that point. I’m going to type in “wind power,” and I’m also going to take the “birds” to see about the concern about birds being affected with turbines.

When I typed in my terms, you notice other terms came up. These are things that other people have typed in. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is a good search, but you may have your thinking stimulated by seeing some of those other terms that you could use in the search.

When we do our search, we get 200 results. To whittle that back a little, look at the left-hand side of your screen. If you need a scholarly peer-reviewed article, check here. That will eliminate other kinds of materials like newspapers. You probably don’t want to go all the way back to 1967, so I’m just going to search for articles put out in the last 10 years. That will make our list a little bit smaller.

There are other limits you can make. When we recommend you stay away from is the “full text” limiter. Whenever full text is not sitting on the screen, we have added a library link, and if you click on our library link we will take you to a text of the article if it is available in our system, and you see here that it is. If we don’t have an article, instead of finding the link you will see a message saying, “Sorry, we don’t have access. Would you like to order a copy of this article through our ILLiad system?” You may do that without any extra charge. An electronic copy of the article will be delivered to you within 24-48 hours. In this particular case, we were fine because the article was sitting right there.

Here we are back at our search. To be a little bit about what is contained in an article, click on the title. You can see a summary of the article, and you can also find some other keywords which you might want to use. You can see that for each article, you are given citation in the different styles. These are citations that you can copy and paste into a paper. However, we do recommend that you check because you want to be sure that your citations are done correct.

If you want to save the article to send it to yourself later, add it to your folder. You will see a folder that opens up here at the top of the screen. This is a guest folder. You can create a login on this vendor system if you like this particular software and want to use a lot, but you can also just put things in your guest folder and send them out to yourself. When you do send things out in your folder, you can email them to yourself. You can’t do it. You can print it, or you can export. Export is the tool that takes the citations out to our citation management software.

Moving back to our list, you can continue to work your way through the list, finding additional articles and adding them to your folder. The little blue folder icon with plus sign will also put materials into your folder for later use.

The good news is that the techniques you have used for working in the search engines work across most of the other search engines we offer you. They may look a little bit different, have different coloring and a different layout but essentially all the tools are the same.
