Doctor: How long has this been going on?
Patient: It has been going on for about two months, since the COVID quarantine. I'm not used to being by myself so much. I feel so lonely and anxious.
Doctor: Does anything make your symptoms better or worse?
Patient: I have tried meditation, but I just can't get to that place everyone says you're supposed to get to. Sometimes, it makes me more anxious to sit still. Sometimes, watching sports helps distract me from the anxiety. I love to exercise, and that definitely helps.
Doctor: Tell me about your support system. Are you in a relationship? Or do you have any friends or family that you are close to?
Patient: I have family, but they live out of state. I am divorced, and don't have any children. I do have some friends, but they are all quarantining, so I have not seen them. We have done a couple of Zoom calls, which is nice for a bit, but not the same as seeing someone in person.
Doctor: I definitely understand that. We're in some hard times. Have you ever had thoughts of hurting yourself?
Patient: No, I'd be too afraid to do that.
Doctor: Good. I would like to assess your level of anxiety. Would you mind answering a few questions for me?
Patient: Sure.
Doctor: Great. Here's a questionnaire that helps me understand your level of anxiety. Take a few minutes to fill it out. I will be working on my charting over here.
