Performing the Weber and Rinne Tests Transcript

Narrator: Next, perform the Weber Test. To begin, tap or stroke the tines of a tuning fork to set it in vibration. Then place the base of the fork on the midline of the patient’s skull.

Doctor: Let me know if you hear it in your left ear, right ear, or both equally in both.

Narrator: The patient should hear it equally in both ears, indicating normal conduction and sensory neural hearing.

Patient: I hear it the same in both ears.

Narrator: To complete the hearing assessment, perform the Rinne Test.

Doctor: I want you to tell me when you stop hearing the sound.

Patient: Okay.

Narrator: To assess bone conduction, place the base of a vibrating tuning fork against the mastoid bone. Note how long it takes until the patient can no longer hear the sound.

Patient: Now.

Doctor: Now I want you to tell me when you stop hearing the sound.

Narrator: To assess air conduction, quickly move the vibrating tines one to two centimeters from the auditory canal. Note how long it takes until the patient can no longer hear the sound. Air conduction should be twice as long as bone conduction.

Patient: Now.
