Relating Malcolm Knowles Adult Andragogy Theory to Art “Old Skiffs”

For an artifact , I would make a Kaltura video and relate the following information to the images in the picture. The art would be the visual focus of the video and I would include the following information in my narrative. I chose Knowles because I love learning and teaching adults. I also enjoy art and I believe teaching, like nursing, is both art and science.

Malcolm Shepherd Knowles (1913–1997) was an American educator well known for the use of the term andragogy as synonymous to adult education. According to Malcolm Knowles, andragogy is the art and science of adult learning, thus andragogy refers to any form of adult learning.

Despite the fact that the term andragogy had been used abroad for decades, it was Malcolm Knowles who began to use the word in North America. Hence, he is known as the father of andragogy. Knowles' next book, The Modern Practice of Adult Education: Andragogy versus Pedagogy, was published in 1970.

Knowles identified six assumptions about adult learning: (1) need to know : adults want to know why they need to learn something before undertaking learning, (2) self-concept, (3) prior experience, (4) readiness to learn, (5) learning orientation, and (6) motivation to learn. (Knowles et al., 2005)

I would use the picture created for me by my friend who is an artist and teacher. As I explain Knowles I would relate and explain why I think these ideas relate to the images in the picture.

Painting of Old Skiff

  1. Adults have a self-concept, are internally motivated and self-directed. (The Dock)
  2. Adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiences. (Sophie—Yellow Skiff )
  3. Adults are goal oriented. (Red Skiff)
  4. Adults are relevancy oriented. (Blue Skiff)
  5. Adults are practical. (White Skiff)
  6. Adult learners want to be respected and are open to modern ways of learning. (The Water)

Nursing Theorist Connection to Knowles

Use the nursing theorist that you selected in Week 1. My nurse theorist is Patricia Benner; her theory relates to skill acquisition and her model is named Novice to Expert. The educational humanist learner-centered andragogy purposed by Knowles is congruent with Benner and teaching adults new skills. For instance, a newly diagnosed diabetic is a novice in self-management. With the help of an APN primary provider, this patient may grow in skill to develop expertise in self-management.

APN Practice Example Related to Knowles

I would explain how this andragogy relates to APN. For example, when teaching a newly diagnosed diabetic about his/her disease I would inquire what he/she knows about the disease or who he/she knows with it (experiences and knowledge). I would let him/her know the importance and relevancy of learning self-management and assess the patient’s self-concept, motivation, and buy-in (relevancy and motivation). I would complete a teach-back method for glucose checks, diet, exercise, and medication administration (practical). This may include interdisciplinary consults. I would include a family member if possible. I would ask the patient to set goals for weight and A1C ranges before the next visit (goal oriented).
